My name is John Mallon, and I am the new Democratic Party Precinct Chair for Precinct 2106, which covers Deep Ellum.
I've lived in Dallas for two years, and I'm a lifelong North Texan. I grew up in Irving, where I graduated from Nimitz High School. I moved to Denton, where I got a BA in Political Science and a Master's in Public Administration from UNT (Mean Green CCAAWW!!!). I needed a change in scenery, somewhere with more action, so I moved to Dallas to take a job in the public sector. Now I'm a photographer, a union leader, and a transit activist. Watching the Republicans get swept back into power in 2024 and seeing how far some politicians were willing to go to cut critical public services in 2025 compelled me to step up and volunteer in a way I had never done before.
The Democratic Party sees the role of a Precinct Chair as turning out Democratic voters, but my personal philosophy is that this role is an educational one. My obligation to the people of Deep Ellum is to know what the local, state, and national issues are and to talk about them with my neighbors. I believe that the Democratic votes will show up if I can do that.
I want to build a future where housing, healthcare, food, and clean air and water are recognized as human rights. Where DART is seen as a public good worthy of investment, not as a scheme that fails to directly make money. Where the union makes us strong. Where companies get more than a slap on the wrist for doing real harm. Where politicians are held accountable for corruption.
All politics is local, and Deep Ellum, from the Pittman to Exposition Plaza, is ripe to build this future.
